The Australian Museum has an international reputation in the fields of natural history and indigenous studies research, community programs and exhibitions. The Museum was established in 1827 and is Australia's first museum, with unique and extensive collections of natural science and cultural artefacts.

Opening times - The Australian Museum is open 9.30am to 5.00pm every day except 25 December.


Admission - Payment is made at the Admissions Desk, Level G. You can pay by cash, EFTPOS or any credit card EXCEPT Diners Card. Card payments are only for amounts of AUS$10 and over.

General Admission - Family (2 adults, 2 children) $25, Family (1adult, 2 children) $17.50. Extra child (each) $2.50. Adult $10. Child (5 - 15 years) $5. Under 5s FREE.

Concession card holders - Government Concession Card Holders $5. Australian Student Card Holders $5. Seniors Card Holders NSW Government Issue $5. Australian Museum Members FREE. Australian Age Pensioners FREE. Schools: $5 per student.

Lockers - There is no cloaking at the Australian Museum. You can leave bags in a locker for a $1 coin for up to four hours.

Photography - Flash photography and video cameras are permitted in all Permanent Exhibitions and most Special Exhibitions at the Museum. Photography and videotaping for commercial use should be coordinated through Marketing, phone: (+612) 9320 6181.

Parking for Museum visitors - When coming to the Museum, you can park at Secure Parking Riley Street East Sydney Monday to Friday if you arrive before 10am and leave after 3pm the cost to park per day is $12. Alternatively you can park for up to 4 hours for $5. You will need to collect a coupon from either the Museum's admissions or William St reception to take advantage of this offer.

Public transport - The Australian Museum is handy to two train stations, Museum Station and St James Station, and the main bus routes into the city. For George Street bus services, get off at Town Hall and walk up Park Street.

Accessibility - Entrances to the Museum (including Wheelchair and Pram entry). The Museum is located next to Hyde Park, Sydney, Australia. There are two entrances: General public, all school and booked groups - use the stairs at College St entrance doors. They lead you straight to the Admissions Desk. Prams and Wheelchairs (and Business Visitors) - from the corner of College Street and William Street use the driveway and ramp access to William St Reception entrance.

A wheelchair accessible toilet is located on level 2 at the entrance to search & discover near the lifts. Parking for visitors with wheelchairs. There are free Museum Guided Tours and a program of Temporary Exhibitions and Events that change regularly. You cannot book tickets for tours or exhibitions, unless you are visiting as a group in which case you must book your visit in advance. To help you find your way around the Museum you will be given a free guide map that includes a self-guided highlights tour over the three levels of the Museum.

You can print out Museum Guide Maps, which show a floorplan of each level of the Museum from this website. The Museum can get very busy, particularly during school holidays. It's a good idea to visit during the week if you can, or get here before 11am, as mornings can be quieter.
